The three-year B.Sc.Nautical Science course is conducted under affiliation with the University of Madras. It is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. It is a course leading to Second Mates Foreign-Going Certificate of Competency awarded by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, after 12 months of sea service, enabling the cadets to become Navigating Officers on board Merchant Naval ships anywhere in the world. The three-year B.Sc.,Nautical Science course is strictly residential. The syllabus is specially drawn up to give broad based maritime education, with special emphasis on fundamentals of maritime subjects and practical aspects of the profession. The educational and training programme is designed to inculcate officer like qualities and a high sense of discipline in the cadets.
Entry Requirements : Academic Standards : A pass in 10+2 or its equivalent examination with minimum 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics group, (but not less than 50% in each subject), and atleast 50% in English at 10th or 12th standard Age : 17 to 25 years as on 3rd August 2009 Medical Standard : Candidate should be physically fit for sea service under standard norms, with minimum unaided vision 6/6 in each eye, and with no colour blindness.
Vel's Academy of Maritime Studies is situated at Pallavaram, Chennai, about three kilometers from Chennai International and Domestic Airport. The Academy is headed by a Captain Superintendent and amongst its Faculty are highly proficient Lecturers (who are ex-Mariners) and Instructors, with years of experience on board ships and ashore, who take meticulous care to train the cadets to be future deck (navigating) officers. The Academy has three sophisticated workshops, a Simulator room, and three laboratories for giving cadets the necessary training. As a part of the curriculum, cadets are taken on board ships in Chennai harbour for shipboard familiarization. The minimum eligibility for courses in nautical science and Marine engineering is 10+2 or an equivalent examination with physics, chemistry and mathematics. He should also pass a medical fitness test for sea service under standard norms and with eyesight 6/6 with no color blindness. Candidates wishing to enter the navigational and engineering fields of Merchant Navy need to complete a Bachelors degree in Nautical Science or Marine engineering, before they can gain admission to the field.
