The Department of law offers Ph.D Programme in two streams viz., Full Time and Part Time.The relevant rules are as under. Ph.D. RULES AND REGULATIONS ( Effective from academic year 2004-2005) 1. The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy ( Ph.D.) shall be conferred by Osmania University in the Faculties of Arts, Commerce, Management, Education, Law, Social Sciences, Oriental Languages, Science, Technology, Engineering, Informatics and in such other faculties as may be notified in future, in accordance with the provisions of these rules and regulations in current or amended form, and subject to the conditions laid down herein. 2. An admission to Ph.D. course is subject to fulfillment of the following conditions . 3. ELIGIBILITY: a) In all faculties except Science, Engineering, Technology and Informatics a candidate is eligible for registration/admission to Ph.d. course in a subject, if he /she i) holds a Master’s degree in the concerned subject or in an allied subject ( approved by Osmania University) with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate. In case of students belonging to SC and ST category, the aggregate shall be 50% marks. AND ii) holds M phil Degree in the concerned subject or in an allied subject ( approved by Osmania University) OR iii) is qualified in the UGC-CSIR/NET GATE examination or SLET examination of Government of Andhra Pradesh: or awarded a Research Fellowship by UGC/CSIR Government Organization. OR iv) has published as the first author, at least two research papers in the broad area of research in standard journals recognized by the University. In case of more than one author proportionate credit will be given for the purpose of registration. However, in respect of articles published in the journals which are not recognized by the University, the Dean concerned in Consultation with the Chairperson, Board of Studies of the respective Departments will select two external referees to whom the Research Articles submitted by the candidates shall be forwarded for evaluation and recommendation or acceptance as research articles. In case any one or both the referees reject the articles as not being research articles, the candidate shall not be eligible. b) In the faculties of science, Engineering, Technology & Informatics, the criteria at 3(i) above is essential qualification for registration /admission to Ph.d. in a subject and the conditions under rule 3 ( ii to iv) may be treated as preferable. 4. REGISTRATION a) The University will issue a notification once in a year inviting Applications from eligible candidates for registration to Ph.D. course However, in case of UGC/CSIR/NET/M.Phil qualified candidates with research fewlloship additional notification will be issued by the concerned Dean. b) Eligible candidates are required to select a topic of research in consultation with a Research Supervisor, recognized by Osmania University in the consent to supervise the research work to be carried out. c) Joint supervision is permitted in interdisciplinary areas of research provided the two supervisors are not from the same subject. In all such cases, the candidate has to be obtain the written consent of both the Supervisors. d) In case the candidate registers with a supervisor working in a recognized research center other than the University, the joint supervisor may be from the same subject, or an allied subject ( approved by the University), but is working as a faculty in Osmania University. e) The application for registration with the required fee and enclosures, including the synopsis of proposed research work duly approved by the supervisors(s), shall be submitted to the Dean of the concerned Faculty on or before the stipulated date.
The Faculty of Law, Osmania Univesity has a glorious history of more than 100 years. The Law class was opened in the year 1899 to give instruction in law to students desirous of legal profession along with “Judicial Test” classes for Judicial Officers. Thus teaching of Law was in existence even before Osmania University came into existence in the year 1919.
