Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies (SIMS) was established with an aim at developing a pool of high calibre seafarers trained at all levels to work in the increasingly demanding shipping industry.
Students are given training that is over and above mandatory international standards and successful graduates can look forward to a rewarding seafaring career in the maritime industry. Having successfully instituted a world-class Post Sea Training Facility, SIMS embarked on another visionary training project in starting a world-class Pre Sea Training Facility for deck and engine cadets. Located at Lonavala, Maharashtra, this campus complements the present post sea training offered in Govandi, Mumbai.
Both the Post-Sea Facility in Mumbai and the Pre-Sea Training Campus in Lonavala are committed to providing an outstanding maritime training opportunity to Indians that is over and above the international mandatory standards.
Duration:- 4 months (Post Sea) Degree by IGNOU. Certificate of Competency (COC) by D.G Shipping, Govt. of India Requirements For Deck Cadets Age For Class XII: Not more than 20 years as on the starting date of the course For B.Sc. in PCM or Electronics: Not more than 25 years as on the starting date of the course For B.E./B. Tech. The institute offer Chemical Tanker Familiarisation (CHEMFAM). this is a full time course. The duration of the course is 5 days. The course is approved by the Indian and Singapore Administrations.
Successful completion of this course shall enable trainees to serve on chemical tankers in an operational capacity (that is, other than master, chief engineer, chief mate or second engineer), and to perform specific duties and responsibilities related to those duties in connection with cargo and cargo equipment, provided they are not immediately responsible for the loading, discharging, care in transit or handling of cargo.
Duration:- 6 months (Pre Sea):-Purely Residential, Lectures and Practical/Workshop 6 months onboard /ashore in Marine Workshop:- Practical Experience in Machine shop, Operation & Maintenance of Marine Power plant systems and Auxiliaries Requirements For Engine Cadets Age:- Not more than 25 years as on the joining date Marital Status:- Unmarried Academic Graduation in B.E (Mechanical) Engineering / Naval Architecture from an AICTE/UGC approved institiute with minimum marks of 55% in final year Medical:- Physically fit and meet the standards laid out DG Shipping* Language:- English shall be one of the subjects with minimum marks scored 50% in class X or XII or degree Eyesight:- Use of corrective lenses permitted

The institute offer Engine Room Simulator–Operational Level. This is a full time course. The duration of the course is 3 Days. The course is approved by the Indian and Singapore Administrations. Exercises are controlled by an instructor and allow the trainees to become familiar with the equipment, the controls and the instrumentation provided by the simulator. This course trains him to look for normal engine room watch keeping, look for the parameters of the plant, identify faulty situations and rectify small faults. In case of major faults senior engineers will need to be called. The exercises make the trainees familiar with the engine room layout, various equipments and inter connection amongst various equipments and its response to the changes made at the controls in various conditions. The final exercises deal with troubleshooting and will make use of the knowledge and skills learned in all the previous exercises. Equipment failure or malfunction may be introduced during an exercise to afford trainees practice in taking emergency remedial action.
The institute offer Liquefied Gas Tanker Familiarisation. This is a full time course. The duration of the course is 5 Days. The course is approved by the Indian and Singapore Administrations.
Upon successful completion of this course, the trainees shall be able to serve on liquefied gas tankers in the support and operational ranks, that is any rank other than master, chief engineer officer, chief mate or second engineer.
The institute offer Liquid Cargo Handling Simulator. This is a full time course. The duration of the course is 5 Days. The course is approved by the Indian and Singapore Administrations.
The LCHS presently installed at SIMS is a PC-based version which consists of an instructor’s station and 3 trainee stations with a potential of adding 3 more trainee stations in future. Trainees will be able to practice the communication and coordination required on a real ship here.
The institute offer SOil Tanker Familiarisation (OILFAM). This is a full time course. The duration of the course is 5 days. The course is approved by the Indian and Singapore Administrations.
A trainee on completion of this course shall be able to carry out oil tanker operations / duties commensurate with his basic qualifications (support level / operator level), with due regard to hazard control and pollution prevention. After successful completion of the course, the candidate shall be able to serve on an oil tanker.
The institute offer Ship Manoeuvring Simulator. This is a full time course. The duration of the course is 5 Days. The course is approved by the Indian and Singapore Administrations.
This is an intense course of theory coupled with exercises on a full mission ship manoeuvring simulator to get the real feel.
