Sir J J Institute of Applied Art started operations in the premises of Sir J. J. School of Art in 1935 and was awarded independent institute status in 1961. Since 1981 this institute has been affiliated to the University of Mumbai as a college for teaching the B.F.A.(Applied Art), degree Course as prescribed by the University of Mumbai. All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi too has accorded its approval for conducting B.F.A. in Applied Art, Degree Course at this Institute. This Institute has also been permitted by the University of Mumbai to start M.F.A. (Applied Art) Post Graduation Course from the academic year 1988-89. As per the norms of All India Council for Technical Education, University of Mumbai has revised the course pattern to 12+4 years, from the academic year 1998-99. This has been done to maintain course uniformity across the country, also considering the required academic experience of a candidate. The aim of the institute is to provide facilities for the professional and specialized training in Visual Communication. The specialized areas covered are Lettering-Typography, Illustration, Photography, Computer Graphics and the Exhibition Display Design. The Course is designed for the large number of talented youth, whose desire are better satisfied by training that is both theoretical and practical in character. The Institute believes in changing and adopting with time, thus providing relevant and contemporary education. For the last 60 years our alumni have set the standard by which, creative practitioners in advertising, public relation and the media judge themselves. The alumni of this Institute are well placed in the professional field of Communication Design, such as Advertising Agencies, Design Departments of various corporate organizations, Animation Studios, Publishing Houses, etc. Every year the jobs for skilled artists and designers keep on increasing, which in turn increase the responsibilities of the Institute to produce quality talent.
Duration:- 3 years Eligibility:- i) Must have passed the Higher Secondary School Certificate Examination held at the end of XII Standard conducted by the Maharashtra State Board of Higher Secondary Education or an Examination of another University or Board recognized as equivalent there to with not less than 50% marks in the aggregate. (45% marks in the case of Backward Class candidate from Maharashtra State only.) ii) Must have passed Intermediate Drawing Grade Examination of Directorate of Art, Maharashtra State. (Except the candidates coming from the states other than Maharashtra and are eligible for Government of India reserve seats, so also students coming from other countries are exempted from passing the Intermediate Drawing Grade Examination and allowed to appear for Entrance Test for Applied Art.) iii) Should pass an Entrance Aptitude Test conducted by the Institute and prescribed by the University of Mumbai.
Eligibility:- No educational qualification is prescribed in respect of candidates seeking admission to the Apprentice Training Course. However candidates having qualification of S.S.C. with Art or S.S.C. and Intermediate Drawing Grade Examination or having the Apprentice Training Certificate from the employer (Studios) will be given preference. Candidates seeking admission for these courses are selected after an Entrance Test and an Interview.

Photography
Historical introduction of Photography, The Camera - types and uses - the accessories. The lens and the shutter. Practical techniques of focussing and making a successful exposure. Photographic emulsion - different kinds and their specialities. Chemicals used in Photography. Developing the negative - different methods and controls. Making a contact print. Making an enlargement. The Darkroom and its equipments. Requirement of a good enlarger. Lens facts - the defects and their remedies. Studio lighting - lighting for portraiture and table top, still life and special effects. Intensification, Reduction and Toning- methods and materials. Composition - principle and importance. Flash equipments and synchronization. Filters - Various types and their uses. Light of colour - introduction to the major colour systems.
Duration:- 2 years Eligibility:- i) Must have passed the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree Examination in the respective branch of this University or an examination of another University recognized by the University as equivalent thereto. ii) The admission to the course will be made purely on the merits of candidates at the qualifying examinations and on the performance of the candidate in an interview.
